Tegan Chinogurei
We spoke with multidisciplinary artist Tegan Chinogurei at her University, Central Saint Martins, and discussed her work. The conversation explored her practice, from the badges to the making of her own pool table, and the balance between humour and deeper subjects within her wider practice. It was fascinating to get just a small glimpse into the motivations and influences of an artist with such a wide output.
JS: So you are an interdisciplinary artist. What forms does that mainly take
TC: For a lot of my life until now, it was mainly videos. Because I like a short and snappy video.
I like it one minute, that’s it. I’m trying to get into installation, almost, with these sculptures.
Just because I want a video in this sort of space.
I like it online, but I want to really get my message into people.
I feel like people resonate with things that they can touch and feel. I just want to engulf these people in the feelings that I’m feeling. I’m trying to poke out a nostalgia from people and I’m trying to do that through symbols.
Right now, my investigation in my work is trying to find a universe of symbols and codes for people to understand my message, of cherishing things... I’m just usually looking to preserve a memory in my work. And hopefully that’s something else for somebody else that looks at it.
