Sal Redpath

For the second issue of our magazine we spoke to the director/videographer/photographer/creative director/man of many talents; Sal Redpath. The conversation started with a look back at his career so far, shedding light on his directing duo ‘Milton’ alongside Ben Archer. The pair started filming the tour of a friend’s band which opened the door into the world of documentary making. This world would lead them on a journey across the world to New York, Tokyo, with their next stop Mexico. Along the way Sal has made some serious impact through depicting the visual aspect of many of the best bands to come out of London in the past five years including Sorry, PVA, Sarah Meth and Deadletter to name a few. The interview provided an eye opening insight into his work so far and also an inspiring glimpser into his future projects.

Above is a selection of stills from short films (Through The Stew), documentary work (Always Fast, Hardly Accurate) and music videos (Lime Garden). This work is a perfect example of the collaboration that drives a lot of Sal’s practice. Working closely with friends and peers, a lot of the work is shaped by working with others. Exchanging ideas and depicting visual worlds to span across different mediums, largely working with musicians.

Bellow is a range of some of Sal’s fine art photography practice. It became apparent through the conversation that a welcomed break from the chaos that is documentary making, that returning to a more introspective mode of creating allows for a welcomed liberation in his practice, free from outside influence.
