‘Surround’, Glasgow, 19/05/24

Video of live session filmed before the show

Saturday the 18th rolled around it was the first day in the space, The Pipe Factory. A beautifully aged building from 1876, an ornate site that you would never come across in London. We spent the day setting up the space with various artefacts for installation, branches, eyes pasted on road signs, a large spray painted mouth and a couple of ink drawings on fabric. Over the course of the day we had transformed the place, following the lead of Callum who had masterminded the install. Now the space was primed with art, and also set up with all the music gear, the two working together to create the canvas for the next day when it would all comet to life.

We spent Sunday morning with two of the three performers for later that evening, My Rushmore and Weatherman, filming a live session lead by Jamie and Callum with a set of around 4 songs for each band. My Rushmore were a delight, young funny Scottish skater kids delivering carefully skilled and raw midwest-emo-meets-screamo tunes.  Weatherman comprises of excellent musicians. A five-piece outfit including saxophone, violin, bass and guitar/vocals all held together by the backbone of a jazz drummer. Tunes that take you on a journey, rhythmically, texturally and lyrically, all narrated in a strange American accent, only adding to the bands intrigue.

The evening rolled around and the space filled up, with art students, musicians and people from the Glasgow DIY community alike. As the last of the sun streamed into the space, Sorley Macrae under the name Silahk embarked on a sonic journey, followed by the Post Punk sounds of Weatherman, and finally the charmingly chaotic My Rushmore.

‘Surround’ was a great success, a testament to the hardworking and talent of Callum Harrison, Louis Smeeton and Jamie King. With artwork and musical project from Glasgow residents, what resulted was an immersive celebration of young talent that none of. Us will forget anytime soon.
